In an effort to prioritize student mental health, an Iowa high school is implementing measures to reduce technology reliance in the classroom. Hoover High School in Des Moines is set to enforce a ban on cellphones, including the use of headphones, starting next school year.

School administrators have identified a concerning trend of increased anxiety and depression among students, attributing part of the issue to excessive smartphone usage. Student Caden Walker expressed how phone-related distractions exacerbated his mental health struggles, highlighting the need for intervention.

With Generation Z phone users averaging approximately 7 hours of screen time daily, school officials recognize the urgency to address this issue. Assistant principal Rob Randazzo emphasized the importance of reimagining the school environment by minimizing reliance on phones.

Furthermore, the school is urging parents to support these efforts by restricting social media usage for children under 16 years old. By fostering a healthier relationship with technology, both at school and home, the hope is to alleviate mental health challenges among students.
